A BRIEF HISTORY

In close proximity to the Catholic Church known as Our Lady of Seven Sorrows Minor Basilica in Navrongo is where Our Lady of Lourdes Girls’ Senior High School can be found. In the early 1940s, Bishop Oscar Morin, a white father who is today better recognized for his work in Africa as a missionary, established the school, which at the time was exclusively for girls. In 1987, as a part of the educational changes that were being implemented at the time, the school was converted from a school for females only into a mixed experimental junior secondary school. Previously, it had been a part of the middle school system. As a follow-up to the educational reforms, in January of 1991, the school was transformed from an Experimental Day Senior Secondary/ Technical School into a mixed school. Prior to this, the school had been an Experimental Day Senior Secondary/ Technical School. It was decided that the school should be known and called “O.L.L. Girls Senior High School” beginning with the academic year 2009/2010. This decision was made to honor the wishes of the school’s founding fathers.

O.L.L. is one of the schools with the lowest socioeconomic status, and up until this school year (2009/2010), it has not had any significant renovations in a very long time. The infrastructure of the school is not just pathetically inadequate but also severely run down. The school is in really bad shape. It has a rehabilitated vocational skills block in addition to an old administration block, a library block, two technical workshops, and a laboratory block. In addition, there are a total of nine classrooms available, which are distributed throughout its two completed classroom blocks as well as its third, unfinished classroom block. The school also offers a restricted staff accommodation of four quarters, including that of the Headmistress. Each quarter is made up of two bedrooms, with one being entirely run down and in need of thorough renovation.
